Mission Statement: A 12:1+1 teacher provides instruction to students with academic and/or behavioral management needs that require additional adult support and specialized instruction in a classroom no larger than 12 students in a classroom, as mandated on their Individualized Education Plan.  The full-time special education teacher will be assisted by a full-time teaching assistant, who will also render academic and behavioral support to students.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement and differentiate GUGCS curricular programs (CKLA Phonics,  SPIRE: Specialized Program Individualizing Reading Excellence, SFUSD Mathematics: San Francisco Unified School District, in addition to units written in-house and other adopted curriculum.
  • Modify and adapt curriculum materials and instruction to meet the varied needs of your learners
  • Collaborate with Assistant Teacher to render specifically designed instruction to meet the various needs of students with IEPs
  • Manage any 1:1 paraprofessionals assigned to students in the special classroom
  • Collaborate with grade teams and instructional coaches to write rich, integrated units
  • Use the Responsive Classroom model for community-building and behavior management strategies and ensure that any individualized behavioral intervention plans (BIPs) are implemented with fidelity
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners within Specifically Designed Instruction (SDI)
  • Adhere to subject-specific grade-wide pacing calendars
  • Ensure that student IEP goals are regularly monitored for progress by the regular collection qualitative and quantitative data
  • Administer formal interim assessments and informal ongoing assessments, such as Fountas & Pinnell running records, conferencing, end-of-unit rubrics, student portfolios, etc.
  • Use data collected on assessments to modify unit plans, inform groupings, and to support student referrals
  • Participate in grade team and curricular planning meetings
  • Create and maintain an engaging and organized physical classroom environment, making learning accessible to all students
  • Establish and maintain ongoing positive relationships with families, and communicate with families on a regular basis
  • Actively participate in the school community through staff meetings, PD opportunities, staff committees, school events, etc.
  • Work with an instructional coach on specific goals throughout the year
  • Respond productively to ongoing, year-round professional feedback
  • Work closely with the Support Services department (learning specialists, ENL teachers, related service providers) to best support student learning
  • Use weekly lesson plans to help drive instruction in a clear manner

Minimum Qualifications

  • Flexible mindset - as this is a unique position at Growing Up Green, there is a high degree of flexibility and openness to feedback required for a teacher in this role.
  • Ability to manage exceptionally challenging behaviors independently.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a team of teachers
  • Knowledge of Responsive Classroom
  • Experience in environmental education a plus
  • Experience with technology integration
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Starting salary is $61,070 (salary scale commensurate with experience)

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree preferred
  • At least 3-5 years classroom teaching experience in the elementary grades

Required Certificates & Licenses:

  • Special Education teaching certification preferred
  • NYC DOE/Fingerprinting & Background Clearance required
