Middle School Music Teacher (Queens)

Mission Statement: The Growing Up Green Charter School (GUGCS) supports children to be conscious, contributing members of their community through a rigorous, anti-racist, anti-bias, curriculum and engaging green culture. Graduates of GUGCS will be prepared to attend high-performing schools where their interdisciplinary academic foundation, knowledge of sustainability, and a strong sense of self sets them apart as leaders and social justice advocates of the future.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement Responsive Classroom/Developmental Designs management strategies to promote classroom community and to value each student as a vital part of the class
  • Employ a blend of both direct instruction and collaborative, constructivist approaches to meet the needs of all learners
  • Adhere to the GUGCS Pacing Calendar and Scope and Sequence
  • Employ approaches that address multiple types of learners (visual, sensory, kinesthetic, audio)
  • Emphasize that all students are capable and should be treated with high expectations, both behaviorally and academically
  • Value and promote peaceful conflict resolution and creative and authentic problem solving
  • Work with an instructional coach to develop a collaborative relationship through meetings, ongoing observations, and reflective practices
  • Uphold school-wide policy of logical consequences
  • Create and maintain strong parent relationships in our school community
  • Create units of study using Understanding by Design (UBD) practices
  • Lead a daily advisory and independent reading group
  • Attend weekly staff, department, and grade team meetings 
  • Attend professional development workshops

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong commitment to Growing Up Green Charter School's mission and green theme
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a team of teachers
  • Knowledge of Responsive Classroom and/or Developmental Designs
  • Experience in environmental education a plus
  • Experience with technology integration
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Starting salary is $62,902. Salaries are determined using an equitable compensation scale that accounts for years of experience as lead teacher in a K-12 setting and levels of attained education and/or certification

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • At least two years of classroom teaching experience in the middle school grades is preferred

Required Certificates & Licenses: Teaching certificate, NYC DOE/Fingerprinting & Background Clearance
